Bio

Coach John returned to Excel in 2020 to coach in the Excel Boys volleyball program after 2 sabbatical seasons.  He has been coaching competitive volleyball since 1997.  He is IMPACT certified and began his coaching career as a Graduate Assistant for his high school varsity team when he was a senior in high school.  He then became assistant coach then head coach after he graduated from high school.  During those three years, his team qualified in TAPPS State Final Four for the first time in the school’s history, but also qualified in back-to-back seasons. He also spent 2 seasons as assistant Junior Varsity coach at Pantego Christian Academy under Coach Drew Noah.  The team went undefeated both seasons.  Coach John also started his role as a tryout coach and assistant coach for the USAV HP Program in 2013. He has worked at numerous HP Tryouts across the nation and served as an assistant coach at HP Camp. Coach John came to EXCEL in 2010 after spending 7 seasons at Texas Image as both assistant and head coach for 15s and 16s.  He closed his last Image season leading 15 Elite National to qualify for the GJNC at Reno, NV.  In 2011, he led Excel 16 National Elite to a 2nd Place finish at MEQ, and the team ranked top 11th in NTR at the end of season. The following year Coach John led Excel 17 Elite National to qualify for USAV Nationals by winning the Mideast National Qualifier at Indianapolis, IN.  The team posted 20-0 perfect record that weekend.  They also qualified in the TOT and closed the season ranked 4th in NTR. In 2014, Coach John led 14 National-JY to GJNC by qualifying through NTR Bid Regional. The team placed 5th and close the season ranking 13th. Most recently, Coach John led 17 National White to Silver medal finish at Lone Star Classic and qualified GJNC in 2017.  That same team also finished 1st at TOT Qualifier qualified TOT.  17 National White closed the season with 10th rank in NTR. Coach John started his playing career when he was in junior high and played through college.  He played on the first and the only NCAA sanctioned Men’s Volleyball program in Texas at Dallas Baptist University, which won 2nd Place at NCCAA National Men’s Volleyball Championship in 2002. That team also posted numerous tournament wins that year.  Coach John holds an Accounting degree from Dallas Baptist University.  He is married and resides in Grand Prairie with his wife and their 2 boys.
